Take the quilting clas. If you like it you will love it. There is no middle ground with making quilts. Evryone who I know who quilts is addicted! In answer to your question about how long it takes. I don't keep track but it does take quite awhile to make a quilt. I machine quilt mine which is faster than hand quilting but it is still a lengthy process.
If you've sewn before you'll find quilting fairly easy.
